46 people in custody, deprived of food and water

“bugün çağlayan adliyesinde,-3 teki nezarethanedekilere bakmaya girdim. çok açız susuzuz ne olur bişiler getirin diyen, 46 kişilik bir grup vardı, avuc ici kadar, havalandırmasız penceresiz leş gibi kokan bir nezarethanede. bir kac gözaltındakinin yakını ile para denklestirip su, biskrem vs bişiler aldık. “today at Caglayan Judicial Court, I went check on the people kept in custody on thr 3rd floor lockup. In a tiny stinking lockup room without windows and ventilation, there were 46 people that they were hungry and thirsty and begging for some food and water. Together with some relatives of those in lockup, we bought some snacks and water. They only let me in because I was a lawyer; others are not allowed to see their relatives and friends even from afar. A police chief which I saw many times in the past weeks, approached and wanted me to sign a report saying that the people under custody are given food and water. I refused to sign and said ‘why should I sign a report? I didn’t take these people into custody and it’s not my duty to take care of them. You are completely out of reason now. And you keep making up procedures.’ Then this same police chief said to me ‘who are you snapping at, you son of a bitch!!’. We were surrounded by 10 policemen right in front of the lockup room. I did not say a word. They were going to beat me up if I were to respond. In last 10 days I volunteered for following up the procedures such as arrest, statement of prosecution and even deportation for around 30-35 people. However I cannot even speak up against such an assault and break of regulations by making up false report. That is all there is in Turkish Republic. This is the state of law and justice in this country. This is the state of lawyers who work at the widely praised, Europe’s biggest court house.

Police is your friend, if you are so naive to believe!”
